The story is about a rich and politically powerful widow, Saritaji (the evergreen Rehka), who has beautiful daughter Nimmi (the gorgeous Mahima) and later comes to know that she also has a stepdaughter, Shalu (the bubbly Priety). Saritaji has to look after this girl only to keep up with the promise she gave to her husband on his deathbed.

The two sisters are pretty close, though very different from each other. While Nimmi is the very silent and sweet little girl, Shalu is very lively and rebellious in nature. This rebellious attitude of her brings in a crack between mother daughter relationship. The ultimate goal in Shalu's life is to fill up this crack.

There are two guys, Dev (Arjun), a Harvard return, son of a business tycoon and Sameer (Jimmy), a ventriloquist, who are in love with Shalu. Nimmi is also in love with Dev and Saritaji wants her daughter Nimmi to get married to Dev at any cost and warns Shalu to keep away from him. Shalu to please mother, keeps away from Dev, with the help of Sameer

The twist in the story comes in the second half when Saritaji's political career is at stake and how Shalu goes about to save her mother's political power at any cost. The story ends with the realization of Saritaji of her mistakes and ultimately accepting Shalu as her daughter.
